Will you be one of the thousands that will lose their Internet tonight at midnight?
I remember hearing about the malware scam when it first came to light but didn't really think twice about it. Then a couple months ago this story appeared on Yahoo News and I began to think how my life would cease to exist without my Internet and it terrified me. (What a sad, sad life I have. Yes I know)
A short recap on the scam: Millions of computers were infected with a virus that would redirect Internet searches through fraudulent DNS (Domain Name System) servers. This in turn, would bring the unsuspecting victim to fake sites or places that had fake products.
Obviously, the bag guys were eventually caught. The FBI set up temporary servers to redirect traffic from those infected with the virus. Tonight at midnight, that comes to an end though. If your computer is infected you will lose your Internet access completely.
Don't be stranded people. There are many places you can go online to test your computer. This link here: Internet Blackout, is the original story on Yahoo News. It has all the sites listed. A couple of them ask for your IP address and the others can find it for you.
If you need to find your IP address you can go here: http://whatismyipaddress.com/. Or if your one of those people who don't like clicking on strange links from strange people, you can actually find it by clicking on your Start Menu, All Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt, or by searching for Command on your computer. Then typing in: ipconfig
It will be listed as IPv4 Address.
So get to it....go test your computer. Then come back here and let me know how it went for you. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me.
